About
It's time to take the next step and build our power by showing up in Austin for the upcoming Texas Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Advocacy Collective on March 9th, 2023. Texas legislature meets only once every 2 years for a total of 140 days. During this time, essential laws are made that can significantly impact the Asian and Pacific Islander community. It's critical that we show our presence and develop long-term relationships with our elected officials.
When we are using the word "AAPI" we are referring to Pacific Islander, Southeast Asia, South Asia, West Asia, Central Asia, and East Asian cultures. Within this umbrella term, there are 48+ different ethnicities and over 300+ languages and dialects. We believe any level of AAPI and intersectional identities must be included to have an authentic representation of our communities.
This is a historic moment for us to be at the Texas State Capitol! Press conference will be LIVE streamed.
Agenda
9:30am - 10:00am Introduction and Welcomes
10:00am - 12:00pm Visit Legislative Representative
12:00pm - 2:00pm Press Conference (Live Streamed)
We will be visiting certain offices and letting them know what bills are important to the Asian and Pacific Islander community. We have the opportunity to influence and shape the laws that affect our lives. We have to make ourselves known and make a difference! This event is collaborated and established by powerful coalition of Asian Pacific Islander partners, across the state, to make a positive impact.
Why do we need to show up in large numbers?
Asians is one of the largest growing communities in Texas, but we need to make sure that legislative leaders know our communities needs. This is a great opportunity to show up in front of our representatives to prove we care, be visible so we can drive change, and get to know our elected officials so they will respect our needs.
*** No experience needed. We will be meeting our elected officials in teams with our partners. ***
This event is in collaboration with SAAVETXEF, Asian Texans for Justice, Woori Juntos 우리 훈또스, OCA Greater Houston, and Indian American Impact Project.
