Our Story
In 2020 and 2021, a group of AAPI community organizers, activists, and friends in Texas were working alongside one another to tackle important issues such as voting rights, redistricting, anti-Asian discrimination and violence.
Recognizing that these, and many other issues, have deep impacts on the quality of life of their community, they volunteered much of their time and capacity to educating and mobilizing the AAPI community to be civically engaged.
It became clear their volunteer efforts would not be enough.
Given the quickly growing and diverse population of AAPIs in all corners of Texas, it was evident that the AAPI community in Texas deserved to be represented at the decision-making table for all policy issues.
All Texas policy issues ARE AAPI issues — and without a statewide organization committed to bring local AAPI leaders together, build coalition with other advocacy organizations, and resources to engage with AAPI voters year-round, AAPI voices were not being adequately represented.
It is with this intention that Asian Texans for Justice was formed in 2021.
Since then, ATJ has been committed to serving the more than 1.9 million AAPIs in Texas by connecting our community to civic action. We believe that civic engagement, policy advocacy, and coalition building are keys to creating a more equitable state for all people.
