Dr. Satsuki Ina will discuss her newly released memoir, The Poet and the Silk Girl: A Memoir of Love, Imprisonment, and Protest, in an engaging conversation that goes beyond her family’s story of defiance during WWII incarceration. The event will feature a moderated panel discussion diving into the intersections of Japanese, Jewish, and Mexican experiences of displacement, persecution, and resilience. Panelists will explore how these histories connect to modern-day issues, including the detention of migrants at the U.S.–Mexico border and the broader implications of national detention policies. As an Emmy award-winning documentarian, activist, and co-founder of Tsuru for Solidarity, Ina’s insights will ground this critical dialogue, creating space to reflect on the shared legacies of these communities and their relevance to today’s urgent social and political challenges.
